Altoona Community Theatre's Isaac Mishler Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theatre

Dates and Deadlines - 2012 Isaac Awards

Friday, February 17 - Deadline for school applications

Official Applications returned to ACT via U.S. mail:

  1. Entry Form
  2. The $50 entry fee.

    Your $50 entry fee will get you 4 free tickets (value $68) for the exclusive use of your superintendent, principal, or school board members. (This is in response to a suggestion from the Teacher/Directors to attempt to get more participation from school administrators.)

    However, we do not want the $50 entry fee to keep any school from participating in the Isaac Awards. If the fee would cause a hardship for your program, just include a letter explaining why.

Friday, April 13

Deadline for Teacher/Directors to select participants in the opening number.

As in previous years, we will kick off the awards show with a group number that includes two students (a boy and a girl) from each of the participating schools. We need you to select two students to represent your school.

Your students must be able to attend all three scheduled rehearsals:

  • Saturday, May 19, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.;
  • Saturday, May 26, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.;
  • Sunday, May 27, 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. (prior to the Isaacs at 7:00 p.m.).

You may choose based on whatever criteria you like. You might choose an up-and-coming underclassman, or a talented senior who did not get a lead in this year's musical, or someone else who you feel deserves recognition. Keep in mind that these students are representing your musical theatre program in the opening number. They should be able to sing and dance.

Please send the names and e-mail addresses for your selected students to webmaster@altoonacommunitytheatre.com

Friday, April 13 - deadline for Achievement in Design Award

This award is meant to acknowledge and encourage students who have either independently designed or have worked with a member of your production staff to design sets, lights, costumes, or any other technical aspect of your production.

The Isaacs judges will accept one nomination from each school, as selected by the director. The name of the nominee as well as a short description of his/her design work should be submitted 10 days before the production, so that the judges may see the student's work in person. To submit a name for consideration, or for further information, send an e-mail to webmaster@altoonacommunitytheatre.com.

The nominated student will be asked to submit a Nomination Form as well as photographs of their design work. The form and photographs will be due Friday, April 15 to ACT, PO Box 908, Altoona, PA, 16603.

Wednesday, May 16

Deadline for your school’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award.

Each school will select their own MVP using their own criteria and selection method. You might choose a graduating senior who didn’t get a lead this year or someone who works quietly backstage. You might decide to have your cast and crew vote on the MVP. The only rule is that it must be a student who was involved in your production.

At the Isaacs ceremony, all the MVP’s will go up onstage together to receive individual award certificates and a big round of applause from everyone.

Wednesday, May 16

Deadline for Teacher/Directors to submit nominee photos & bios, production photos.

During the Isaac Awards, photos of the nominees are projected onto a screen on the Mishler stage as their name is announced. As the individual winners walk down the aisle and approach the podium, we will read a short bio (approximately 50 words).

"Justin is a junior at Penn Cambria. This is his second role in a high school musical. He has been onstage at Cresson Lake Playhouse and Altoona Community Theatre. Justin is also involved in _____ and _____."

Production photos or photos of the entire cast will be projected onto the screen for schools nominated for "Best Musical" and "Best Production Number."

Wednesday, May 16

Deadline for payment for group tickets. Any group reservations not paid for by this date will be released for individual sale. (Individual tickets available 24/7 through ACT's online ticketing service.)

Lobby Displays

Promote your show and your musical theatre program. Our judges have commented on the great lobby displays at many of the participating musicals. Each school will have the opportunity to display a collage of their show or of their musical theatre program at the reception following the Isaac Awards.

Please note that a collage is optional. If you want to participate, the maximum size is 3' by 5'. The format can be either portrait or landscape. (No slide shows, no video.)

You will need to bring your collage to the Isaac Awards and drop it off in the theatre lobby when you arrive at the Mishler. We will set it up on an easel at The Columns prior to the reception. (You should take it home with you after the reception.)
