Job Description: Special Effects Supervisor

The Special Effects Supervisor oversees the planning and implementation of any special effects required for a production.

PRE-PRODUCTION & REHEARSAL PERIOD

  • Obtain budget figure and production forms from the Production Manager. Itemize all expenses on the forms provided by Production Manager. Attach receipts.
  • Determine with the Director the type and number of Special Effects required for the production. Review the list with Set and Lighting Designers as necessary and with Mishler Technical Director to ensure they meet with the theatre’s safety and other requirements.
  • Determine with Director and Stage Manager when Special Effects will be added to rehearsals.
  • Prepare Special Effects for implementation.
  • Determine with Director and Stage Manager the cues for when the Special Effects will take place and prepare a prompt book or cue sheets for the Special Effects technicians.
  • Make sure Stage Manager has all cues marked in his or her prompt book Determine with Stage Manager whether Special Effects operators will cue their own effects or take cues from SM.
  • Recruit capable technical staff to run Special Effects during the performances.

AT THE THEATRE

  • Personally set up or oversee set up of all Special Effects prior to each performance.
  • Ensure all Special Effects are unplugged at end of each performance if necessary. Lock effects mechanisms and supplies in a storage trunk when appropriate.

POST-PRODUCTION

  • Oversee strike of Special Effects at end of production. Arrange for safe disposal and/or storage of effects supplies.
  • Complete production report and return to Production Manager with receipts attached as appropriate.
  • Submit necessary forms for reimbursement of expenditures, with receipts attached as appropriate.
