This haunting and humorous musical is a mash-up, fractured fairy tale that includes Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (of beanstalk fame) along with a pair of handsome but shallow Princes. When all their stories, and the stories of other fairy tale characters, lead into the woods and become intertwined, dreams come true, and wishes are granted. But “happily ever after” eludes them as they learn the tangled consequences of getting what you wished for.
Winner of multiple Tony Awards including Best Musical (1988) and Best Revival of a Musical (2002), it was made into a hit movie in 2014 starring Meryl Streep as the witch.
